Opening with the renowned Kammerchor Stuttgart at MODEON

That the best choirs in the world come together in one place to compete is remarkable. That they give joint concerts is extraordinary. The fact that the international choral world has been coming to the Allgäu region again and again since 1989 for one of the world's most renowned competitions for chamber choirs is unique. The 18th International Chamber Choir Competition Marktoberdorf will take place from 26 to 30 May 2023 and offers both a musically exciting competition and exceptionally high-ranking concert events.

The competition will open with a welcome to the participating choirs from all over the world on Friday, 26 May 2023, at 8 pm with the Kammerchor Stuttgart in the MODEON Marktoberdorf. The Kammerchor Stuttgart is considered one of the best ensembles of its kind. Frieder Bernius formed the choir 55 years ago into an exceptional phenomenon celebrated by the public and the press. The choir's repertoire ranges from the 17th to the 21st century. The choir's vocal brilliance, perfect intonational purity and a plasticity of text declamation that can hardly be surpassed are considered unrivalled.

Many international awards testify to the high quality and worldwide recognition. The artistic activity of conductor Frieder Bernius is characterised in particular by his own distinctive conception of sound and his search for the historical appropriateness of every style in European music history since 1600. For his services to German musical life, Frieder Bernius was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon.
