International Masterclass for Choral Conducting with Conducting Competition from June 11 to 14 at the Bavarian Music Academy Marktoberdorf
The International Masterclass for Choral Conducting with Conducting Competition takes place directly after the International Chamber Choir Competition. The Masterclass is aimed at all choral conductors who want to improve their skills and knowledge with outstanding experts at a high level. The participants had to apply with a video and go through several rounds. In the end, only four out of around 20 participants are allowed to conduct in the final concert. The best three choir conductors will then be awarded a prize. The Masterclass ends on Saturday, June 14, at 7 pm with a public final concert at the Bavarian Music Academy Marktoberdorf.
The high-ranking masterclass will be led by Georg Grün and Yuval Weinberg. Georg Grün is an internationally sought-after choral conductor and choral sound specialist. He founded the KammerChor Saarbrücken in 1990 and is still its artistic director today. From 2000 to 2013, Georg Grün held a professorship for choral conducting at the Mannheim University of Music. He has been a mentor of the Conducting Forum of the German Music Council since 2010 and was jury chairman of the Marktoberdorf International Chamber Choir Competition from 2015 to 2019.
Yuval Weinberg is chief conductor of the SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart and frequently works with leading ensembles throughout Europe. In 2017, he received the award as best conductor at the Marktoberdorf International Chamber Choir Competition.
The participating choir at the 19th International Chamber Choir Competition, Lund University Academic Choir from Sweden, under the direction of Cecilia Martin-Löf, acts as a practice choir for the participants of the International Masterclass for Choral Conductors. The Lund University Academic Choir is a mixed choir with around 50 singers and was founded in 1927 as a women's choir and later expanded. Works by Benjamin Britten, Anton Bruckner, Ulrika Emanuelsson and Max Reger, among others, will be rehearsed and performed.
