Greetings and a hearty welcome to the Ostallgäu holiday region
There, where Bavaria is at its most beautiful, between the Ammer and the Tannheim mountains in the south and the hilly Alpine foothills around the Free Imperial town of Kaufbeuren in the north is where it lies, the Ostallgäu holiday country.
Even the Bavarian kings were attracted to the charm and magic of this countryside in and bordering on the mountains, so much so that they built homes here: Crown Prince Maximilian, later King Max II., rebuilt and developed the castle ruins of Hohenschwangau into a holiday residence. His son, Bavaria’s fairy-tale king Ludwig II., made, just a stone’s throw uphill, a daring dream come true: Neuschwanstein Castle has since then become the unmistakable symbol for a truly royal holiday region. For what was right for their Bavarian Majesties and their followers is certainly good enough for small and grown up holidaymakers today.
Very many guests from near and far come to the International Chamber Choir Competition and to Musica Sacra International not only to visit the internationally famous Marktoberdorf Whitsun festivals but also to combine their visit with a few additional days in the Allgäu region. The regional capital of Marktoberdorf, the Ostallgäu regional district as well as the whole Allgäu region offer a vast amount of tourist and cultural attractions, whether you a lover of the arts or of nature.
Let yourself be inspired and infected. The following pages offer you a whole range of suggestions to fill your holiday stay in the beautiful Allgäu region:
What to see in and around Marktoberdorf
Marktoberdorf is not just worth a visit to the annual Whitsun festivals. Anyone coming here should visit the Bavarian Music Academy in the one-time summer residence of the Prince Bishop of Augsburg, Clemens Wenzeslaus. Afterwards, one can take a walk along the Prince Bishop Alley, which was planted by him.
For those coming into the Allgäu region, it pays to visit the Festival Theatre in Füssen.
The Festival Theatre occupies a spectacular position directly on the Forggen lake, the adjoining romantic baroque garden is a dream, the dimensions of the theatre are gigantic, with 1350 seats and five different restaurants – all with a unique view of the lake and the Neuschwanstein castle, which you should not fail to visit.
